I know you have watched the Deepwater Horizon Movie by now and have heard the word Blowout Preventer (BOP) being used in the movie but you may have never encountered that word before the BP deepwater horizon incident.

In simple terms the Blowout Preventer (BOP) is a big size valve which is  a very critical safety element to every rig and platform.

In order to drill a well, BOP is a very vital parts in which it is installed on top of the well head above the sea floor with its main function being  to prevent the backflow of the flux inside the well from expanding in which it can cause disaster to an Oil Rig like what happened back then in 2010 at Deepwater Horizon.

Interesting facts about BOP is we apply it not directly according to the formation pressure, instead, we double the BOP pressure! For an instant, if the formation pressure below the sea floor is 10,000 psi, we will double the BOP pressure to be installed and become 20,000 psi to ensure the safety of the Oil Rig above it and its crew.
